Expanded Biography

Joined the Computer Centre of the University of Salford in 1982 as a systems programmer responsible for the day-to-day running of the University computer systems. In 1984, traveled to the University of Adelaide in Australia to help with a joint development project concerning the development of a Cobol compiler for Prime computer systems. In 1985, spent six months on secondment from the University in the Sultanate of Oman setting up the computer centre of the first University in the country. This work ranged from assistance with building design to purchasing of equipment and employment of staff. On returning to the University of Salford, became the University Microcomputer Coordinator in charge of the promotion and development of micro-computing facilities at the University. This task developed into a purchasing role where he was responsible for aiding departments of the University wishing to undertake ‘special’ deals with computer manufacturers. Over time this developed into a more national role whereby he negotiated deals for academic sites in general with organisations like Novell, Microsoft and WordPerfect. In 1991, he established a group known as Salford University Network Services (SUNS) which had the responsibility for managing computer networking support for all academic sites in the UK who took out site license deals with Novell. This work included involvement with academic institutions across the world, training programmes, European Projects and business development exchanges. In 1998, he took SUNS out of the computer centre of the University and incorporated it as a new division of Salford Software Ltd, one of the University wholly owned companies. As a Director of this company I was able to be more proactive in the development of the activities of SUNS and the benefits that the company could offer to academic sites. I was my drive and enthusiasm that developed the service offerings at Salford and enabled Novell to become the leading provider of network services in the UK academic community. For a variety of reasons it became necessary in 2002 to divide the SUNS functions within Salford software into two and I became the Managing Director of a new University Company, Salford Computing and Training Services Ltd (SCTS) charged with the responsibility of developing the training, event and promotional side of the business to all sectors not just academics. In 2004 the University decided to close down SCTS and our SCTS work was transferred to MindWorks Inc. Ltd., a company owned by ourselves, external to the University. MindWorks Inc. Ltd. continues to promote certified and bespoke Novell training to Novell customers and partners and to arrange courses and events in various locations around the world. MindWorks Inc. Ltd. works closely and openly with many Novell partners and regularly provides bespoke training courses for their staff and customers to complement their work and sales functions. By not selling boxed product or licenses Mindworks Inc. Ltd. are not considered a threat by any of the partner organisations involved in the delivery of computer solutions.
